I will be faced with making decisions that will involve some
knowledge of scientific concepts. I want to be able to make these
decisions based on sound scientific knowledge and not on the whims of
what my friends think or fear. For example, I heard a lot about radon
gas and its dangers. Until I took ChemCom I never really understood
what this gas was. I now have a better understanding about radon gas
and I have a better understanding of how to control it.
I never realized that chemistry was involved in the making of
plastics. I always knew that plastics were made from petroleum but I
never realized the special properties that resulted from certain
types of chemical bonds.
I now understand what unleaded gas means and the importance of
octane ratings.
Water is a chemical compound that we in this area of the world
take for granted. On the molecular level, it is a pure substance, but
in real life, being a universal solvent, it may contain substances
that are not good for us. We need to realize the importance of water
and protect this valuable resource.
In Pennsylvania, we will in the near future be able to decide our
electricity provider. When I make my decision, I will examine not
only price, but how the electricity is being made (nuclear, coal or
oil). I read in a recent newspaper article that wind power generated
electricity is becoming more popular.
I enjoyed taking ChemCom, the labs were good and I enjoyed
working in small groups. I really enjoyed the town meeting. I would
recommend ChemCom to my friends.
